Originally set to release in March with an accompanying Korean concert, Taemin’s 3rd full length Korean album titled “Never Gonna Dance Again” is finally being released! On August 4th, 2020 at 6pm KST, the “Prologue” first single “2 KIDS” was released digitally worldwide. Taemin said many things about the concert which was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In his interview for Vogue (April 2020) Taemin said that he filmed a lyrical hip hop concert video presented as if he’s dancing alone in front of a full moon. “Although Teacher Lee Sooman also gives me advice, I feel like I’m the producer of my solo album.” (cr. ixakaixa).
 

Taemin said during “2 Kids on the Block” Vlive to think of “2 KIDS” as the trailer that comes out before the movie. The teasers designed as movie posters were an idea came that from Taemin himself. The prologue (“2 Kids”) he had considered releasing last but the story is meant to be told in this order. Act 1 has a dramatic performance – something you haven’t seen before. Even though he’s an idol, this isn’t something you’d see in an idol world. Act 2 will end everything strongly, best of the best, game over. With this album, Taemin said that he was very hands on – choosing the MV director personally, meeting with the MV director, stylists, etc. He said in an interview with W Korea that he wanted this album to be a turning point in his career and use it as a way to give himself a rebirth – showing not just the facade of “Taemin” but also the sincere human side as well. With this release, he said he wants to create a deep, saturated color. The title track “Criminal” was originally written by Lauren Aquilina, a 25-year-old British singer-songwriter. “Criminal” is described as a synth wave genre song with an overwhelming suspense rhythm & newtro (new-retro) sound. The lyrics conceptualize using the fatal charm of ‘Stockholm Syndrome’ along with Taemin’s sensual vocals and gives the feeling as if you are watching a movie.
 

The MV was produced by VM Project Architecture (“Press Your Number”, “Drip Drop”), directed by Jo Beomjin (“Press Your Number”, “Drip Drop”), art directed by Ok Shin (“2 KIDS”), and the content/visual director was Lee Sangmin. The choreography for “Criminal” was done by Kasper (“Crazy 4 U”, “One by One” Off-Sick ver) & Koharu Sugawara (“Sayonara Hitori”, “Flame of Love”, “MOVE”, “WANT”) according to Teen Vogue.
 
“Never Gonna Dance Again: Act 1” debuted on US iTunes as the #1 album on the All Genre chart, SHINee’s first #1 on US iTunes and highest to date. “Criminal” also peaked at #56 on the All Genre song chart. The album also ranked #1 in 31 other countries on iTunes including Japan, Canada, & Mexico. Domestically, “Criminal” topped 3 Korean charts (Bugs, Genie, & VIBE).
